In Xu Dongrong’s new abstract paintings, the linear shape of calligraphy like “Land of Smashing Clouds†and “Scattering Earthshaking†is naturally reminiscent of the surrealist “Automatic Writing†strategy, which is less purposeful. It is used as a means of releasing writing, writing or sketching of potential, rather than using it to produce some kind of pre-planned picture or shape. Just like Max? Max Ernst (Max Ernst) claimed that this release process can be regarded as a way to discover the subconscious, the purpose of which is to show the mechanism of poetic inspiration, and to expose the moral considerations or aesthetic standards that hinder inspired inspiration. Therefore, the process is much more important than the result, and the production of pictures and creations no longer separates from everyday life. Every sincere and conscientious artist can use automatic writing to release his personal potential. However, perusing Xu Dongrong's new abstract paintings implicitly implies the post-modern spatial thinking process, namely: the space of time, the transformation and the mediation, as well as the combination of different language changes.

The artist Xu Dongrong’s concept of abstract painting was also applied to the 2013 stone carving new work “Yesky Skyâ€. It was created with a complete block of white marble. In the seemingly abstract three-dimensional shape, it incorporated the imagination of traditional stories and rural legends. In the interpretation, the image of Guan Gong, a classical Chinese hero, is expressed in a semi-objective manner. At first glance, it looks like a rugged rock formation, but at a certain angle it resembles a man's side face profile, which is in accordance with ancient literati. The so-called "abstract seeing the peaks on the side of the mountain, the heights of the horizon are different," the abstract poetry between the similarities and dissimilarities pursued. This is the most special feature of Xu Dongrong's new series "Elephant Invisible" launched in 2013. This can be said to be an artist's creative career.
Since it is called Dacheng Dacheng, before discussing the “Invisible Elephants†series, the viewer must first have a certain degree of understanding of Xu Xurong’s accumulated creative history. Xu Dongrong, who was born in 1947 in Pingtung, Taiwan, was very enthusiastic about art since childhood. He was enlightened by Cai Shuilin in junior high school and went to work in Taipei after graduating from high school. He first became an apprentice at the ceramics factory and laid the foundation for traditional Chinese painting. Because of his enthusiasm for the jade's warm and transparent texture, he entered the gemstone company to study jade carving. After serving his military service, Xu Dongrong, who has always been passionate about artistic creation, continued to learn sketching and watercolor from Kaohsiung artist Luo Qingyun. In 1971, Xu Dongrong was admitted to Taiwan. The Department of Fine Arts at the National Taiwan Normal University began to systematically interact with the creation and progression of pure art. In 2013, Xu Dongrong’s new series of “Invisible Elephants†was not only a linguistic progress but also a creator’s rumination of the life course. .

If the artist's creative project is based on the continuous improvement of self-expression language, Xu Dongrong's "Invisible Elephant" series is nothing more than a milestone value extension. With modern shapes, reinterpreting the artistic conception of classical myths, from abstract to semi-figurative, Xu Dongrong responds not only to situations that are closely related to himself, but also reflects the rich and inclusive face of this era.
